Once rulers of the land, the Royals succumbed to the Ruin, leaving behind their wealth, their property, and their privilege. Modern-day aristocrats have now stepped into their place. Aristocrats own almost everything, and engage truefolk, either by individual contract or on an ongoing basis, to keep the Dramark running while they spend their time in capricious comfort. They throw the most lavish — or scandalous — parties, to elevate their social status among their peers and to whittle away the days until the bitter end. Aristocrats represent duty to the community and the rewards of fulfilling that duty. (Or, often, neglecting that duty in favor of something more appealing.) Being an aristocrat is usually an exercise in having vast privilege and using it vainly.
About the Aristocrats
Five families make up the current aristocracy: House Astus-Willough, House Bellephine, House Dara, House Galdepark, and House Valgreave. However, the term family is used very broadly, and intentionally so. The aristocrats aren’t related strictly by blood, and may also include found families and tight-knit relationships. Social pressures obligate aristocrats as they strive to maintain their status, standards, and influence within their circles, among which they often compete against rivals and navigate secret alliances. Aristocrats also have access to grand estates that can shelter them against the dangers of the Ruin… so long as they’re maintained accordingly.
